Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) with the chemical formula (C8H8) x·(C4H6) y·(C3H3N) z is an engineering thermoplastic resin (polymer) obtained from the polymerization of Styrene and Acrylonitrile in the presence of Polybutadiene.
The composition ratio of each material varies based on the desired property. Accordingly, Acrylonitrile can vary between 15 to 35%; Styrene between 40 to 60% and Butadiene between 5 to 30%.
The presence of styrene gives the plastic a shiny (polished) and impermeable surface. Also, Polybutadiene, which is a Rubber material, increases its toughness and impact resistance even at low temperatures, and Acrylonitrile increases the strength and chemical resistance of the polymer.
